Ku'uipo Murray, PMP, CSM, MBA

Founder, Principal Consultant

Mana'olana International emerged from Ku'uipo's vision. She is a project management professional (PMP), a certified scrum master (CSM), and a project, program, and portfolio management consultant and trainer.

Ku’uipo consulted and trained many organizations and helped to establish Project/Program/Portfolio Management Offices at Queen’s Healthcare Systems, State of Hawaii, Oceanit, Diagnostic Laboratories, Bank of Hawaii, Hawaiian Electric, Kamehameha Schools, Hawaiian Airlines, First Insurance Company of Hawaii, City and County of Honolulu, and various military branches.


Ku’uipo is a Director of The Mana’olana Foundation, a non-profit organization established to serve, support and transform the lives of native Hawaiian people throughout the globe.

She is a former owner of Project Professionals, LLC, a successful project management and business process management consultant and training organization from 2000-2015. She developed project management curriculum for several academic institutions and taught at Hawaii Pacific University, University of Hawaii, Hawaii Community College, Honolulu Community College, The Japan American Institute of Management Science and University of Phoenix. She was a former adjunct professor at Hawaii Pacific University teaching graduate courses in project management.

Ku’uipo served six years as a Board Member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Honolulu Chapter and was a former Chapter President. She also served on the Board of Directors for the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM) and was a mentor to the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) Hawaii Chapter.

She is Chair of the Governing Board of Kamalani Academy (a K-8 Na Mea Hawaii, Arts Integration, Leader In Me Public Charter School), and a founding board member of the Kamalani Academy Foundation.

Ku’uipo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Systems Computer Science from Brigham Young University-Hawaii, a Master of Business Administration in Human Resources Management from Hawaii Pacific University, and is working towards a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership.



Scott Nakagawa, PMP, LSSMBB

Chief Executive Officer, Principal Consultant

Scott serves as our Chief Executive Officer responsible for managing Mana'olana International's overall operations.

He is a certified project management professional (PMP), is TOGAF 9 Certified, a certified Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma and Theory of Constraints, an Oracle Certified Foundations Associate, a Certified Coach from The Dartmouth Institute for Health Care Policy and Clinical Practice, Microsystem Academy, and a Stanford Certified Project Manager from the Stanford Center for Professional Development. He has over 30 years of project management and process improvement experience working with various organizations in industries including healthcare, telecom, airlines, logistics, construction, food service, software development, banking, and credit unions. Throughout his career he has done work for Kuakini Health System, SynCADD Systems, UnitedHealth Group, Allscripts, TeamPraxis , Herbert Horita Realty, Business Solution Technologies, Palace Saimin, The Queen’s Health System, Hawaiian Telcom, Applied Research Works, World Wide Technology, and Hawaiian Airlines. Scott has enjoyed growing multiple start ups and is proud that each startup he has contributed to is now a marketplace leader in their respective industries. He also enjoys navigating the complexities involving business improvements in large corporate enterprises.

Scott has served as a Hawaii Award of Excellence examiner and recently served on the Board of Directors of Kamalani Academy (a K-8 Na Mea Hawaii, Arts Integration, Leader In Me Public Charter School).

He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Hawaii and a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies - International Trade from Chaminade University.

Ben Yuan, PMP

Chief Financial Officer, Principal Consultant


Ben serves as our Head of Finance and oversees Mana'olana International's financial and internal business operations.

He is a project management professional (PMP), a certified scrum master (CSM), enterprise architect (TOGAF 9.1), six sigma black belt (SSBB) and a project, program, and portfolio management consultant and trainer.


Ben has helped to establish and develop Project Management Offices and Continuous Improvement Practices at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii (HMSA), State of Hawaii, Kaiser Permanente, Agilon Health and Amazon Web Services (AWS). He has over 16 years of project management and process optimization experience working with various organizations in industries including healthcare, aviation, banking, construction, software development, insurance, education, and government. Ben enjoys connecting people, crisis management, driving business results, solving impossible problems and evidence-based decision making.


Ben is a Director of The Mana’olana Foundation, a non-profit organization established to serve, support, and transform the lives of native Hawaiian people throughout the globe.

He has developed and taught project management curriculum for several academic institutions and nonprofits including Hawaii Pacific University, University of Hawaii, Olelo Community Media, Hawaii Alliance of Non-Profit Organizations (HANO) and Learning and Performance Improvement Solutions (LPIs). He is currently an adjunct professor at University of Hawaii-West Oahu teaching undergraduate courses in business administration, project management and cyber security.

Ben served six years as a Board Member of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Honolulu Chapter and serves as the Chapter President. He also served on the Board of Directors for the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) Hawaii Chapter and provides student mentorship to the University of Hawaii – Shidler School of Business.

He has been recognized locally and internationally for excellence in project delivery excellence. Under Ben’s leadership, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii (HMSA) received the Project of the Year Award (2015) for HMSA’s migration of its members from the Hawaii Health Connector to a Federally Facilitated Marketplace, HealthCare.gov. Ben was awarded Consultant of the Year (2013) by the state of Hawaii governor’s office for excellence in consulting services in support of Integrated Program Management Office functions to deliver the Hawaii Health Insurance Exchange and provisions of the Affordable Care (ACA) for the State of Hawaii.

He holds a Bachelor in Business Administration from University of Hawaii-Manoa, a Master of Business Administration in Corporate Finance from Hawaii Pacific University, and an Education, Leadership and Management Certificate at University of Pennsylvania-Wharton School.

Melia Abreu, EdD, LSSBB

Chief People Officer, Principal Consultant



Dr. Melia Abreu has 20+ years as an educator and Learning and Organizational Development professional. She spent the first 17 years of her career in K-12 education where she first cultivated a love for education, human and talent development, technology, and system design.


At Kamehameha Schools, Melia taught eight different courses while at Kapalama High School, created the first non-compulsory dual articulation course with the University of Hawai'i Community Colleges, co-implemented the largest K-12 1-1 laptop integration on the West Coast at the time, co-implemented numerous LMS and enterprise-wide systems, co-designed and implemented a Teacher Leadership program, and co-launched a new performance evaluation system for the tri-campuses. In addition, Melia served on the enterprise-wide Web Council, served as the primary Internet Safety and Security Presenter to parents in partnership with the FBI and HPD, and served as the first system educational designer to embark on creating Kamehameha Schools online school


While at Hawaiian Airlines, Melia co-designed and implemented an international leadership development program. At FCH Enterprises, Melia co—implemented a streamlined training program with an accompanying system-wide mobile device program, co-decreased system time to hire metrics, and co-designed and implemented a management and leadership program. While at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii (HMSA), Melia co-designed and implemented an enterprise-wide Remote Capability Campaign in COVID, the first Change Management Framework and training series of its kind, and facilitated the design of the first Diversity and Inclusion program.


Melia was also invited to present internationally for the International Society for Technology and Education on technology integration and for the Training Industry for leadership development.


Melia has an Educational Leadership doctorate from the University of Southern California and holds a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from the Council of Six Sigma Certification.


During her free time, Melia helped to found New Hope Windward and has served as the Frontline Producer and Director intermittently, founded the Parent-Teacher Association at Windward Nazarene Academy, and served as a volunteer with the Association for Youth Soccer for 12 years. Melia currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Board for Kamalani Academy in Wahiawa, Oʻahu, enjoys all forms of art, beach going, and walking and continues to donate blood to the Blood Bank of Hawaii since 2005.

Tom Nguyen, MSIE, LSSMBB

Senior Consultant

Tom has extensive continuous improvement and lean manufacturing experience gained over his 10-year career in the oil and gas, distribution, and airlines industries. Tom has held leadership positions and led lean transformation in companies such as Halliburton, Weatherford, USPS and Hawaiian Airlines. Tom helped to create a lean culture by placing a huge focus on respect for people and continuous improvement at the forefront of every action.


Tom is extremely passionate and motivated with everything he is involved in and carries that same energy over to his family, goals, and personal dreams. He strives to improve the performance and health in himself and everyone he meets. Tom believes goals and dreams were revealed to each person for one reason… To accomplish them! Tom’s goal is to push each person past comfort level limits to achieve greatness!


Tom holds a bachelor’s and Master of Industrial Engineering from the University of Houston, Lean Bronze certification from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and a Master Black Belt certification from Villanova University.
